Be yourself – it’s what you can do best!
“The best way to get what you want is to be what you are”.
~ Alan Cohen
But what are you?
Are you your parents?
Are you your siblings?
Are you your friends?
Are you your spouse?
Are you your kids?
Are you what someone else thinks you are?
Are you what someone else expects you to be?
Are you what your fifth grade teacher told you you are?
Are you what your boss thinks of you?
And why would you want to be anyone else? You are you and they are them. You have your path and they have their own. And it’s ok. Actually, it’s great! Because this is all what it is all about: finding your uniqueness and sharing it with the rest of the world. Think about it: if you spend your life being someone else, who is ever going to be you?
How to find out who you are:
- 1. Detach from what others expect of you – yes – including your immediate family: if you fit, you will fit anyway and it will be better!
- 2. Drop all of YOUR expectations of others – yes – including your kids: guide them but let them be THEM.
- 3. Detach from social should-be, could-be, would-be: it is what it is.
- 4. Stop comparing yourself to others: “Comparison is the death of joy” – Mark Twain.
- 5. Shake off arbitrary beliefs and social rules that make no sense to you (provided they don’t harm others).
- 6. Drop your guards: experience and express.
- 7. Don't blame others: own your successes and your failures.
- 8. Pay attention to what makes you happy: cultivate that.
- 9. Act: “Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance you must keep moving” – Albert Einstein.
- 10. Quit retracing the past and waiting for the future: start living NOW.
Don't blow up your life in an instant. Rather, give it some thought and start acting consciously. Anywhere you stray, get back on track. It takes work but it is absolutely do-able!
“Be yourself. Everybody else is already taken”.
~ Oscar Wilde
